Jail Time for Nicole Richie

Celebutante and reality-TV star Nicole Richie was sentenced yesterday to 90 hours in jail and fined $2,048 after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of drugs.

Presiding Superior Court Commissioner Steven K. Lubell told Richie, 25, she was lucky nobody was killed when she drove the wrong way on a
Burbank, Calif., freeway early on Dec. 11. When police found her Mercedes-Benz sports utility vehicle parked in a carpool lane, Richie said she had smoked marijuana and taken Vicodin before getting behind the wheel.

The co-star of "The Simple Life" was also given three years' probation and ordered to complete a second-offender drug and alcohol program by Feb. 20 as part of a plea agreement, the Associated Press reports. A prior conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol from 2003 had made Richie eligible for a sentence of 90 days to a year in jail.

Richie, who's rumored to be pregnant but has not confirmed it, entered the Glendale, Calif., courthouse on the arm of her boyfriend, Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, wearing a loose-fitting black dress and spike heels.

Lubell said it would be up to the state Department of Motor Vehicles whether to suspend Richie's driver's license. She must serve her sentence before Sept. 28 and may elect whether to do so in either a city or county jail.
