The Spears family and Jamie's employers Nickelodeon have both rallied around the teenaged television star during a "very difficult time." However, her pregnancy maybe difficult to reconcile with her career, especially if she wants to bring up her child in Louisiana as a single mother, as is being reported.
Jamie's aunt, Chanda McGovern, in an interview has said that she feels Jamie may have damaged her career forever. She even expresses the fear that the pregnancy could put the teen in a downward spiral.
If nothing else, Jamie will need to learn to live with the paparazzi hordes that always stalk her 10 years older sister Britney.
The threat to Jamie's career does not come only from the challenge in managing a family, a career and her teenage hormones. There is a more direct threat.
Nickelodeon, which produces Zoey 101, is owned by Viacom, a company with a past record of being very pernickety about its image.
As Forbes points out, Viacom did not hesitate to end its 14-year partnership with Tom Cruise when it assessed that the star's antics could adversely affect their squeaky clean image.
What Cruise did, jump around on a sofa while on the Oprah Winfrey professing his love for Katie Holmes and aggressively promoting his beliefs in Scientology, could be construed as a lot less damaging to its image than Jamie’s pregnancy at the tender age of 16.
There is also the question whether the pregnancy could be viewed as statutory rape.
Jamie's television show targets teenaged audiences and her continued presence on the show is bound to rattle many parents.
Vanessa Hudgens risqué photo scandal was an indiscretion that did not buck the law and Disney could continue with her following a apology in the name of forgiveness.
However, it is impossible to put a pregnancy behind and move on.
