Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards has become quite a high profile event, as its twentieth annual ceremony proved on Saturday night, bringing out huge stars like Nicole Kidman, Jessica Alba, Hayden Panettiere, Ben Stiller, Orlando Bloom and winners like Adam Sandler, Dakota Fanning, Beyonce, and Queen Latifah. The show aired live on Nickelodeon on Saturday night and was hosted by Justin Timberlake, who helped hand out the orange Blimps that tell stars, movies, and shows that they're the kids' favorites. The whole show was like a messy kids dream, full of super-sized slime bursts at both the audience and the stars presenting and receiving awards. Let's just say - the Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards are not what you would call a typical black tie affair.
The winners of the Kids' Choice Awards are selected using all of the different Nickelodeon digital platforms, including voting online through Nick.com or even texting in votes, like they do on American Idol. This year more than 40 million kids picked the winners in 16 categories, which was 13 million more than last year's record. The ceremony took place last night at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion.
Host Justin Timberlake also won Favorite Singer, of course, and he was only one of the hight wattage stars on display on Saturday night, most of whom were willing to get into the messy fun. Celebrity participants included, according to Playfuls.com, Will Ferrell, Nicole Kidman, Orlando Bloom, Dakota Fanning, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Steve Carell, Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, Bindi Irwin, Hilary Duff, Jessica Alba, Jamie Lynn Spears, George Lopez, Jon Heder, Chris Evans, Chris Tucker, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, Tobey Maguire, Jackie Chan, Mandy Moore, Drake Bell, Emma Roberts, Jesse McCartney, Nelly, Ciara, Shia LaBeouf, Hayden Panettiere, Ice Cube, Masi Oka, Ty Pennington, Tyler James Williams, Rihanna, Devon Werkheiser, Lil' JJ, Nat Wolff, Alex Wolff, Chris Brown, Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Ryan Sheckler.
The Kids' Choice Awards opened with a sliming of Mandy Moore, Jackie Chan, and Chris Tucker and famous people, usually so concerned about their appearance, were getting slimed through out. Tobey Maguire and Steve Carrell seemed to gleefully enjoy getting slimed on live national TV at the Kids' Choice Awards and Vince Vaughn even had a first for Nickelodeon fans, an interactive sliming. Kids chose online what sliming would happen and huge geyser of slime opened under the stage and turned Vince Vaughn into a sticky mess.
Believe it or not, they actually found time to give out awards last night in between all the messy fun. The TV awards winners were American Idol for Favorite Show, Drake Bell from Drake & Josh for Favorite Actor, and Miley Cyrus from Hannah Montana for Favorite Actress. Shaquille O'Neal won Favorite Athlete for the fourth time. Justin Timberlake won Favorite Male Singer and Beyonce Knowles won Favorite Female Singer. "Irreplaceable" by Beyonce Knowles won Favorite Song and Black Eyed Peas won Favorite Group. The Harry Potter books won Favorite Book.
In the movie awards categories, Adam Sandler won Favorite Movie Actor for Click, an award that he's won three times now. Favorite Movie Actress went to Dakota Fanning for her work in Charlotte's Web. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest won Favorite Movie and Happy Feet won Favorite Animated Movie. Queen Latifah won for Favorite Voice in an Animated Movie for her turn in Ice Age: The Meltdown and Spongebob Squarepants won Favorite Cartoon for the fifth year in a row as Spongebob Squarepants: Creature From the Krusty Krab won Favorite Video Game.
Finally, the coveted Wannabe Award, given to the celebrity that kids most want to be, went to Ben Stiller, and it was presented to him by last years Kids' Choice Awards' host Jack Black. There were also performances on Saturday night, including Gwen Stefani and Akon singing "The Sweet Escape" and Maroon 5 singing a new song called "Makes Me Wonder".
A half hour highlights version of the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards will play on Tuesday at 5pm, Thursday at 8:30pm, Saturday at 12pm, and a week from today at 5:30pm, all on Nickelodeon, of course.
